fter years of employment at a well-run country club in North Carolina, an unexpected change in ownership forces best buds Kris and Max to re-evaluate their lives, their world…everything. With more responsibility comes less power, more stress, questions of loyalty and a never-ending stream of silly.

Kentrell says, “As a director, sometimes it can be tough to get your idea across and find your “voice.” Whether it’s replicating some of the greats or following the new trends, I’ve learned that it’s best to just do what you know and make room for growth. Mistakes will be made but it’s the journey and comradery that make it all worth it. Up To Par was an idea that happened on the fly. I was with my partner Stephanie visiting Universal Studios in Hollywood. We were having a conversation about our future while looking over the Lakeside Golf Course. Talks about getting a house and/or possibly moving back to the east coast were among the topics as we gazed over the golf course. As we continued the conversation, Stephanie said “Why don’t you write about golf? You like playing the game and you mentioned that you wanted to write something new and different with your comedic style.”

My brain exploded, metaphorically of course, and I couldn’t wait to get started. I could get into more of the details of how this project came to be but it’s more about the why. Why this project? Why this type of show and style? Why now? Comedic television has always been a familiar friend.  I grew up with multi-cam sitcoms from Sandford And Son to Family Matters to the now single camera sitcoms like Psych and New Girl. Even sketch comedy shows like Sherman’s Showcase and The Chappelle Show were some of the inspirations on the type of quirky comedy I wanted to portray. And in the great words of the character Rafiki from the Lion King, “It is time.”  You may be thinking, “oh, is it time to write a show about golf because no one else is doing it?” Hell yeah! This sport is so much fun and invokes so many emotions including laughter, drama, slight insanity, and so much more. It is an almost exact replica of our daily lives where each hole is like each day. When you add everyday quirky humans into the mix, it becomes so relatable that the audience would have no choice but to engage and prepare for an adventure filled with humor, heart, and maybe a few unexpected twists along the way.”
