As Canadians, we are constantly searching for our identity, but part of “Canadian identity” is a confusion as to what “Canadian identity” means. Part of this comes from Canadian stories not being told in the media enough.
In watching many films not from Canada, we have found that some of the more interesting stories told are ones that are specifically set in a time and place, where the specificities become universal and more relatable. This also works really well for comedy.
Sometimes zeroing in on one thing is the funnier choice, compared to trying too hard to write about things everyone understands.
Our intent is to tell a Canadian story within the action genre, set in a specific futuristic landscape. We thought an interesting way to show Canadian identity on screen would be to envision a world where Canadian identity has been changed drastically, so little idiosyncrasies of Canadian cultures are heightened and stick out more, adding to the comedy of the piece.
