irector Statement:
Is charitable work “good” by nature, or does the intention behind it matter? I would argue there’s a pretty clear-cut answer to this question. In this film, antalya may claim that she’s engaging in work meant to benefit those who have been displaced by catastrophe, but her motivations behind this work lie solely in improving her own public image. That’s the fatal flaw of all performative activism: indifference to the issue at stake, and a focus on “what can I GAIN from this?” Through this film, I aim to tear down this notion that the intention doesn’t matter when a good deed is produced nonetheless. We see through antalya and Siobhan that not only can a friendship crumble at the hands of performative activism, but also that combating any societal issue is in vain when the effort is disingenuous. And hopefully we have a few laughs along the way.
